Happy Nutrition Month!

March is the most favourite month of most dietitians, including myself, as we work extra hard to promote good nutrition across the nation. With healthy eating being such a broad topic, each year the Nutrition Month campaign has a specific focus to make health messages less overwhelming.

This year the spotlight is on "Eating 9 to 5", recognizing the challenges of eating around a busy work schedule. This is a great topic, as many people may know the basic principles of good nutrition, but often have trouble fitting it into their busy lives.

To celebrate, I'll be discussing common healthy eating challenges and posting tips this month on how to eat better despite a busy schedule. So, lets get started!

CHALLENGE: MORNING RUSH

Despite most breakfast meals being prepared within 5 minutes, limited time is one of the most commonly cited reasons for skipping breakfast. Almost 40% of Canadians skip breakfast!

Though skipping meals has often been thought of as a great way to control weight, the opposite is actually true. Eating breakfast can help to improve appetite control--decreasing your morning snack food cravings--which can contribute to reduced weight gain over time. When we think about the most popular breakfast foods, it's no wonder that eating this important meal has been shown to leads to better intake of key nutrients like fibre, calcium, potassium, and vitamin D.

SOLUTION: Choose breakfast items that

• require little preparation time in the morning

• can be made the night before

• can be eaten on the go

Remember to eat health & live happy,

Anna Gofeld, RD
