Fad Diet Red Flags

The new year is well upon us, with many setting weight loss and better health as goals in 2015. However, for the majority this is something they've strived for and failed at repeatedly, despite the best intentions. At just 4 weeks in, the gym is already looking emptier, as the initial excitement weens and the realization of efforts needed for success sets in. 

 

 

It's important to remember that when it comes to getting in shape and losing weight, it’s important to keep in mind that sustainable changes take time and effort. Though the latest fad diet or weight loss supplement might help you shed pounds quickly, there’s a good chance that you’ll gain them back just as fast. In addition, some diets may restrict nutritious foods, putting your overall long term health at risk.

Some common RED FLAGS of fad diets include:

  • Promises of fast weight loss (more than 2lbs/1kg per week)

  • Very low calorie diet plan (<800kcal/day) without medical supervision

  • Unproven or false weight loss aids promoted—ex: fat burners or starch blockers

  • Encourages dependence on company products instead of teaching how to make good choices at regular grocery store

  • Counselors without any training or relevant qualifications

  • Employees or salespersons acting as counselors

  • Requirement to sign expensive long term contract

  • Risks of program not explained (ex: possible interaction with certain medications)

  • No emphasis on long term and realistic lifestyle changes—i.e. exercise and healthy eating

An individualized program that takes into account your health status, lifestyle, and personal preferences is the most effective way to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

When seeking nutrition and health advice, make sure that it is from a qualified professional, such as a registered dietitian. There are many out there calling themselves health "experts" who are going on the latest fads, ignoring research and landing people in the hospital.

Do your research before you commit, don't quit, get fit and eat well to enjoy great health in 2015 and years to come!
